CHENNAI : It might just be that much more difficult to get your daily dose of cigarettes on May 31. To mark World Tobacco-free Day, the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peravai has made an appeal to their 2 lakh odd members in Chennai who are involved in the sale of tobacco products, to abstain from doing so on that day. This is part of several other anti-tobacco initiatives that the traders body has organised in association with the Cancer Institute (WIA).TNVSP State president T Vellaiyan said that they would also form human chains to raise awareness about cancer and smoking, at ten different places across the city. Major chains will be seen at the Madhyakailash Junction, outside Egmore railway station and Ambedkar statue in Perambur. In addition, they will also be holding a series of drawing, painting and essay competitions for school children, based on the ‘no smoking’ theme. The prizes for the winners will be awarded by Health Minister Dr VS Vijay at a programme held at the Marina beach on Thursday. He also announced that the group would be participating in the day-long protest against the hike in petrol prices on May 31. However, as June 1 is an auspicious day and several marriages have been scheduled, all shopkeepers attached to their group will raise shutters by 4 pm, for their sake, he added.
