CUTTACK: The Newborn and Paediatric Health Centre (NPHC) at CDA Markatnagar has announced expansion of its neonatal critical care facilities by adding more beds and state-of-the-art equipment in its ICUs. The speciality neonatal and paediatric hospital is all set to increase its ICU capacity from the existing 11 to 15. Of these six would be critical care units and the rest step-down ICU units.  Equipped with five ventilators, advanced LED photo-therapy equipment, two high frequency oscillators, it would be the only hospital in the private setup to have such comprehensive treatment facilities in the State. Orissa, which is still beset with high infant mortality, needs adequate neonatal healthcare facilities. Premature deliveries, low birth weight, respiratory distress, sepsis and other infections are major causes of death among the newborn. “We can save 90-95 per cent of the newborns by providing critical care at the right time,” said head of NPHC Dr Manas Ranjan Upadhyay.
