THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the ‘Ocean State Forecast and Fishery Information System for Kerala’ on Saturday at the South Auction Hall at Vizhinjam Harbour. The function is being organised under the aegis of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Hyderabad, and the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), Thiruvananthapuram. Using this system, fishermen, residents of coastal area and Coast Guard personnel would be given real-time alerts on various status of the ocean like tsunami, tidal waves and direction of sea waves three days in advance, Dr Balakrishnan, Head, Ocean Information Services, INCOIS, told a press meet here on Friday. Information, with 80 per cent accuracy, would be conveyed through digital display boards kept at coastal areas and near religious institutions in the area. Steps have also been taken to convey information via SMS alerts and through FM radio stations and television channels, Balakrishnan said. It will also prove useful for the Meteorological Centre, Coast Guard and the Navy. User-awareness campaigns and training would be given to the end-users on how to utilise the information made available through the system. A detailed workshop is therefore planned in order to provide a thorough understanding of the working of the system. Dr K V Thomas, Head, Marine Services, CESS, and Sheela Nair, senior scientist of CESS, were also present. Saturday’s function is scheduled for 9 am. INCOIS Director Dr Satheesh R Shenoi will introduce the system. Kovalam MLA Jameela Prakasam will preside over the function.
