Islamabad: Pakistan on Friday successfully test-fired a short range surface to surface ballistic missile, HATF II (Abdali), with a range of 180 km, official sources said.

The missile can carry nuclear and conventional warheads to the target.

The test-fire was conducted at an undisclosed location and it witnessed by the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Shamim Hyder Wyyne, Xinhua reported.

It is the second test of this kind by Pakistan in two months.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani felicitated the scientists and engineers on the success.

Pakistan and India, which have fought three wars since their partition in 1947, regularly test-fire missiles. The most recent Indian missile launch took place less than a week back.

India on March 6 had successfully tested a ballistic missile interceptor from a defence base as part of its endeavour to create a shield against incoming enemy missiles.
