Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed most parts of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts tonight as cyclone Phailin reached the neighbouring Odisha coast.

Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds lashed most parts of Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts tonight as cyclone Phailin reached the neighbouring Odisha coast.

According to a senior official, wind with a velocity of 200 kmph is blowing in the region, and power supply in affected areas has been shut down as a precaution.

As many as 90,000 people were evacuated and sent to safer places in the Srikakulam district, which borders Odisha.

In the morning, Vizianagaram district Collector Kantilal Dande had said nearly 15,000 people had been shifted.

The administration in other coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, has also been put on alert.
