THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The families whose houses had suffered heavy damage owing to the pipe-burst at Vazhayila would be compensated with an amount of Rs 25,000 immediately. The damage would be assessed and due compensation would be declared later. This was decided at a meeting chaired by Transport Minister V S Sivakumar on Monday which was attended by KWA officials and Mayor K Chandrika, among others. The meeting was called in the wake of the 15-hour delay which occurred to the damage- control exercise at Vazhayila following the public outrage in the area.It was decided at the meeting to liberalise the tender procedures for the new pipeline project from Aruvikkara to the city which was declared as soon as the UDF government came to power.Already, Rs 55 crore has been released to the KWA to undertake the project, which would be kicked off soon. The local people at Karakulam had pointed out that there were several other minor leaks in the area which could lead to a major burst anytime. In this context, it was decided at the meeting to identify other pipe leaks in the Nedumangad constituency with the help of the panchayat officials and take up preventive measures.According to a KWA official, the minor leaks in the area cannot be plugged now as it would subject the public to further difficulties. Once the main pipe is restored (which would probably be ready by Tuesday afternoon), the minor leaks would be repaired after intimating the local people about the work a few days earlier itself, the official said.
