The control of the Police Department lying with the politicians is the biggest problem being confronted by the department, Justice C N Ramachandran Nair said.
He was delivering the keynote address at ‘Merit Evening’, a function organised by the Tripunithura Janamaithri police station at Abhishekam Convention Centre, here on Sunday.
Justice Nair also said that politicians are competing to get the Home Affairs portfolio, with the sinister intention of protecting criminals and for making easy money. Adding that the Police Department was unable to bring criminals to justice because of the intervention of politicians, he said that the Department should be allowed to function like an independent agency.
Appreciating the Janamaithri Police initiative of the state government, he said that the project should be extended to all police stations. Inaugurating the function, Excise and Ports Minister K Babu said that the initiative of the Tripunithura Janamaithri Police is a role-model to the other police stations in the state. City Police Commissioner M R Ajith Kumar presided over the function.
Psychologist Madhu Bhaskar conducted a two-hour session for students on ‘new trends in the education sector’, as part of the function. Cine actor Siddique presented mementos and certificates to 70 selected students, for securing high grades in the SSLC and Plus Two examinations.
Tripunithura municipal chairman R Venugopal, Kochi City Deputy Police Commissioner T Gopalakrishna Pillai, Tripunithura Circle Inspector Baiju Poulose, Trikkakkara Assistant Commissioner Bijo Alexander, Kerala Police Officers Association district president Suneesh Babu and Kerala Police Association district secretary K K Shibhu were also present.
