Prez poll: Gowda steers clear of BJP
Deve Gowda says his party has not yet decided on whether to support the UPA or the NDA candidate for President.

New Delhi: JD(S) National President HD Deve Gowda says the party has not yet decided on whether to support the UPA or the NDA candidate for President.

Asked about his party's stand on the presidential polls, Gowda remained non-committal and said the party has not yet decided whether to support the NDA or UPA candidate.

"Our relations with the BJP is only to rule the state within Vidhan Soudha for Karnataka's development front programme. So far as the party is concerned, the question of allying with the UPA or NDA doesn't arise for us," Gowda told CNN-IBN.

While the stand of the JD(S) may not be entirely important in the national context as there are too few MLAs and MPs to really make a significant difference to the Presidential polls, some people want to see it as an indication that the JD(S) may not be averse to backing the UPA's choice for the President.

Many people however see an interesting regional context to the whole thing. Political analysts say this was another hint from Gowda that there may not be a very smooth transition of power from JD-S to BJP in Karnataka, scheduled for later this year.

"One needs to realise that the change of baton to scheduled to take place within a few months. The change of government with the power going over from the JD-S to the BJP later this year. This is a very significant statement. There is already talk that BJP's stint in power will be cut short by the JD-S leadership as they are very afraid of giving political space to the BJP in the state," Diptosh Majumdar, National Affairs Editor of CNN-IBN, points out.

"Very simplistically, Gowda is sending out a signal that it has nothing to do with the alliance in the state level," he points out.
