Professor kills self by jumping into well

CHENNAI: An assistant medical college professor committed suicide in Ambattur on Friday. Jothilakshmi (49), an assistant professor at the Chengalpet Medical College Hospital, jumped into a well located at the backyard of her house at Venkatapuram, Ambattur around 6.30 am, said police. Her daughter and her husband Damodara Kumar, also a college professor, heard a strange noise from the backyard and rushed out. Damodaran dived into the well to rescue his wife, but in vain. Later, fire personnel recovered her body. Police said that the woman did not leave a suicide note and that the family claimed that she was mentally depressed and refused to give them a reason for the suicide. The woman, earlier a tutor at Stanley Medical College Hospital was promoted and transferred to Chengelpet Medical College Hospital, ten months ago, police said.A case has been filed.
