ARSIKERE: The proposed mining project at Shashivala and Rampura villages of the taluk has become a nightmare to the villagers. The proposed project by Tata Company is to extract copper.
Sources said that the company had conducted survey in Arsikere and Tiptur taluks to acquire lands in Shashivala, Rampura, Melanahalli, Gollarahatti of Arsikere taluk and Rudrapura and Muddnahalli of Tiptur taluk in 2010. The company had already submitted the proposal to the government to acquire over 1,250 acres, sources added. The villagers beg each and every official who visits their areas regardless of whether it is on official or unofficial visit. Their only request is not to take away their only source of income from them. Sources said that the files related to the Tata company's proposal have been gathering dust and the state government had not responded in any way. The women have been particularly anxious over varying speculations regarding the project. This land is part of our life and our ancestors have been buried in this soil, we won't allow mining here, a villager said.

As per statistics, 90 per cent of the region is fertile land with red soil and recognised as one of the best in the plain lands of the state. Villagers Gowramma and Gangamma threatened that the villagers would commit mass suicide if the government permitted mining.
