Pune Porsche Crash: Special Team To Probe JJB Members Over Bail Granted To Teen Within 15 Hours
The Maharashtra government has set up a four-member committee to probe the conduct of two state-appointed Juvenile Justice Board members, and is expected to submit its report by next week

The Maharashtra women and child development commissioner has formed a four-member committee to probe the conduct of two members of the Juvenile Justice Board and check if norms were followed while granting bail to the teenager accused in the Pune Porsche crash case.

The Juvenile Justice Board’s (JJB) initial bail order for the 17-year-old boy caused massive national outrage due to its lenient conditions like writing an essay and working with traffic police for 15 days. It was forced to revise its order following a police appeal, sending the teenager to an observation home till June 5.

Now, the state panel will conduct an inquiry to find out if the JJB followed the proper judicial process while granting bail to the juvenile accused of causing the deaths of two IT professionals by crashing his luxury car into their motorcycle. The probe will be carried out against the two members appointed to the board by the state government.

An official said the committee was formed last week by the state woman and child development department. It is headed by a deputy commissioner-rank officer from the department and is expected to submit its report by next week, the official said.

Women and child development commissioner Prashant Narnavare said the JJB comprises a member from the judiciary and two persons appointed by the state government. “We have formed a committee to probe the overall conduct of the JJB members appointed by the state government, to check whether norms were followed while issuing orders in the car accident case,” he said.

“I have powers under the Juvenile Justice Act to probe the overall conduct of the members who have been appointed by the state government. We have set up a committee to assess the overall conduct of the JJB members in connection with the order that granted bail to the juvenile after the accident,” he said, adding the committee was formed immediately after the (bail) order was issued.

Another three-member committee is also conducting an inquiry into the alleged manipulation of the blood samples of the juvenile driver. On May 27, the police claimed the juvenile’s blood samples were discarded and replaced with another person’s samples which showed no traces of alcohol.
