CHENNAI: Southern Railway Mazdoor Union general secretary N Kanniah alleged that anti-collision devices (ACD) installed by the railways for averting train accidents have failed in multiple line networks.Briefing newspersons at the conclusion of the 87th annual convention of All India Railwaymen’s Federation here on Wednesday, he said the ACDs proved to be ineffective when they were put on trial at the Chennai Central-Pattabiram section in Chennai. “The device was successful in Konkan and Northern Frontier zones as they are single line network. As far as multi-lines are concerned, ACD would emit wrong signals leading to failures,” he observed. He said the railways could overcome this critical problem by filling the existing two lakh vacancies. Asked how filling up vacancies could be an alternative for ACD, he replied, “It is one of the alternatives. The Railway Board is also working to find out other mechanisms.” The three-day convention adopted several resolutions, including scrapping of the new Pension Scheme for the Central Government employees, who joined after 1-1-2004 and bonus for employees without any ceiling limit. The Convention opposed Centre’s move to privatise the railways. Kanniah also threatened a national strike, if their demands were not fulfilled by the Government.
