VELLORE: Sudden showers on Wednesday brought respite to people from the sweltering heat that began in early March.The sky had been cloudy for the past few days, and on Wednesday heavy thunder showers were experienced across the district.Rain which started at Ambur and Vaniyambadi around 12.30 pm lasted for one-and-a half hours. Some villages near Ambur even experienced hail storm. Vellore, Arakkonam and Ranipet experienced dry weather till afternoon and received rain after 3 pm till about 7 pm. With summer at its peak and temperatures soaring above 40 degrees everyday, the sudden showers brought smiles to people’s faces. As most bore wells in the district had gone dry, people were dependent on the water supplied by lorries and tractors. But now, they believe that the ground water level would be replenished because of the rain. The rain brought its usual woes as well. As the showers caught people unprepared, scenes of vehicles parked on roadsides and waiting under bus shelters were common on Wednesday. The rain partially affected travel but did not disturb daily routines.The average maximum temperature recorded during the day on Wednesday was 36.5 degrees and the minimum was 27.3 degrees.
