The Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the historic GST Bill that amends the constitution to implement a single national tax in place of the existing tax system.
All parties present, including the Congress, voted in favour with the bill, with only the members of the AIADMK walking out in protest over some of the provisions.
The Goods and Sales Tax Amendment Bill was passed after a seven-hour debate in the Upper House during which the Congress led by former minister P Chidambaram tried to corner the government with two demands – that there should be a cap on the standard GST rate at 8%, and that IGST and CGST Bills will not be passed as money bills but as financial bills.
