CHENNAI: The Irula girls who were allegedly raped by policemen at Mandapam in Thirukovilur are yet to recover from the trauma. One of the victims, Vaigeshwari, recounted with horror how her brother was beaten up by the policemen and taken away forcibly in front of her eyes on a false charge.“They kept asking me about the details of our family, which I did not reveal till they used physical force. I wanted to save my family from humiliation, but in vain,” she added.“The policemen then bundled us in their van and took us to a Thailamaram Thoppu, where I was disrobed by a policeman. I did not budge and as a result, I had to face his ire. He raped me despite my cries,” she narrated, as her eyes welled up with tears. “I did not know what happened to the others and I was crying all along for what happened to me,” she recounted.“A little later, I heard cries from the van and that was when I came to know that all four of us had met with a similar fate,” she added.“We cried to Valli, (mother of Kasi who was detained by the police), who consoled us. The policemen then threatened us to keep quiet. We threw away the food they gave us as we suspected it could have been laced with sedatives to put us to sleep. Later, we were let off by the police on the condition that we did not disclose the incident to anyone,” Vaigeshwari said.“Apprehending further trouble we ran to the hills and hid there. The policemen then brought our family members there and made them call out to us, but we did not come out fearing that we would be raped again,” she added.
