KOCHI: Rats are making the life of 100 policemen in the Armed Reserve Camp in Kochi a living hell. “The camp stores armory, bomb squad and dog squad operating devices which are often found damaged by the rats. They bite the wires of the gadgets and make them defunct” a police official said.Though the rat menace is high, no proper pest control drive has been conducted. “While sitting inside the office one can see rats moving over the floor. Pest control drives are also not taken. The store room is the breeding ground for rats. One can even spot the rats in the dog kennels,” the official said.Recently the AR camp underwent a two day pest control programme but there has been no decline in the number of rats. “After the drive, we could trace as many as 30-40 rats on day one and the next day it rose to around 50,” he said.Unlike other government buildings that have regular pest control programmes, the police camps and offices do not have such luxuries. Moreover, the experts feel that a single pest control programme cannot be a permanent solution.“To keep the rodents away it is necessary that regular pest control mechanisms be monitored. A pest control programme conducted once a year can never provide relief from rats as they will resurface again,” an official in the camp said.
