The Govt, however, says that food grain output is envisaged at a record high.

New Delhi: Commodity prices have seen a sharp rise since last year.

But reports suggest that in the past one month where wholesale prices have come down, the retail prices have shot up drastically.

In Delhi, 100 kilos of rice is now costing Rs 2300 as compared to Rs 2100 in March in the retail market, whereas the wholesale prices have slipped by Rs 50, to Rs 1700 rupees.

Wheat, which is being sold at Rs 1030 as compared to Rs 1100 in March, in the wholesale market, is now being sold at Rs 1500 per kilo – up by Rs 100 since last month in the retail market.

The Government, however, says that food grain output for 2007-2008 was at a record high of 227.3 million tones. This is a rise of 4.6 per cent, on a yearly basis.

The agriculture secretary says this year's crop production will include a record of rice, wheat pulses, coarse cereals, maize and oil seeds. The main factor behind the good output are favourable weather conditions, this year.

Prices of wheat and rice have been falling in the last few weeks as farmers deliver their produce to the market.
