Sangma wins LS bypoll, gets Tura
The former LS speaker trounced Congress rival Mukul Sangma by a margin of 1,01,176 votes to win Tura nine times in a row.

New Delhi: NCP leader Purno A Sangma on Sunday won the Tura Lok Sabha seat in Meghalaya for a ninth time.

In the Assembly bypolls the Congress and Shiv Sena bagged a seat each in the Maharashtra and the BJP retained the Mohammadabad seat in Uttar Pradesh.

The former Lok Sabha speaker trounced Congress rival Mukul Sangma by a margin of 1,01,176 votes to win his Tura pocket borough nine times in a row.

The Congress candidate resigned from the state Cabinet in the wake of police firing on student protestors in Garo Hills that left nine dead necessitating Thursday's byelection.

In Maharashatra, Congress nominee Kalidas Kolambkar emerged victorious in the Naigaum Assembly bypoll defeating Shiv Sena candidate Sharddha Jadhav by over 22,000 ballots while the Sena reversed positions in Shrivardhan with Tukaram Surve beating the Congress' Shyam Sawant by 15,752 votes.

The bypolls were held after Kolambkar and Sawant, both supporters of Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, quit as Sena MLA and joined the Congress.

The Congress now has 73 MLAs in the 288-member Assembly, and the Sena 58 members.

The Mohammadabad Assembly bypoll in Ghazipur district of UP went the BJP's Alka Rai, the wife Krishnanand Rai who was killed in a shootout last year.

She bagged 79,370 votes drubbing her SP candidate Sri Krishna by a margin of over 33,000 votes while the Congress' Keshav Ram lost his deposit finishing third with 2,907 votes.

Controversial independent legislator from Mau Mukhtar Ansari and his brother, Samajwadi Party MP Afzal Ansari, named in the killing of Rai were currently in jail.
