New Delhi: The Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed met the Saudi Ambassador, Saleh Mohd Al-Ghamdi, to India on Thursday evening in connection with the P V Naushad issue.
It was conveyed Al-Ghamdi that the incident was unfortunate but not an intentional act by Naushad and that the Saudi authorities should take a sympathetic view.
The Saudi envoy said he will convey to Riyadh the Indian Government's views and make all efforts to resolve the issue.
A Shariat court in Saudi Arabia has ordered that an eye of Naushad, 33, who hails from Anchal in Kollam district, be gouged out as punishment for causing a Saudi to lose an eye during a scuffle.
Meanwhile Indian Envoy to Saudi Arabia, Ambassador M O H Farook, assured Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy that he will do everything possible to have the sentence revoked.
In a telephonic talk with Chandy, he said that he had spoken with the Saudi King and assured that he would take all possible steps for the remission of the sentence.
Chandy had requested the envoy to take up the issue with the Saudi authorities.
