Often we spend considerable time thinking what to buy and then end up with a gift we aren’t sure about anyway.But for any occasion, cakes and chocolates are always a safe and bet. Realising the demand, Naveen Kurian has been cooking up some delicious homemade goodies and catering to a few select bakeries and restaurants in the city.“Cooking has always been my passion. While working at hotels previously, I specifically worked in the confectionery department,” says Naveen who served as a chef at Oberoi Hotel, The Park Hotels, and Hotel Sporting in Switzerland.The home-made goodies that Naveen makes include English cakes and liquor chocolates (moulded chocolates) which are extremely tasty. “I make three flavours of English cakes which I have not really found in the markets here,” says Naveen whose exclusive cakes include ‘Warm chocolate cake’, ‘Coconut carrot cake’ and ‘Orange ginger wine cake’.For chocolate cake lovers, Naveen recommends the warm chocolate cake that is hard crusted on top and soft from inside. “As the name suggests, these pound cakes taste best when they are microwaved for a minute before eating. They use melted dark chocolate and coco butter. No cream is used,” says Naveen who completed his graduation from IHM, Bhubaneswar.Then for people who love sweeter cakes, ‘Coconut carrot cake’ is good which uses carrot cooked in condensed milk and desiccated coconut.“The grated carrot is cooked in condensed milk till the milk gets cooked up completely and garnished with grated carrots before baking. They are softer than warm chocolate cake,” he says.For those who don’t particularly have a sweet-tooth, the ‘Orange ginger wine cake’ is sure to send your taste buds tickling.“In this type, I add some spices and use only home made wines like rose/ grape/ banana/ water apple (chambakka) wines. They taste almost like a Christmas cake,” says Naveen, who only caters half kilo cakes priced at Rs 200 for warm chocolate cake and Rs 250 for coconut carrot and orange ginger wine cakes.Apart from cakes, Naveen makes home made Liquor chocolates or moulded chocolates. “The specialty of these chocolates is that the outer coating is hard and from inside it is soft. It is available in mint, raisin and ginger flavours. A common flavour in all these chocolate is the taste of rum,” he adds. For 50 nos, it costs Rs 150.Naveen’s delicious confectioneries are made under the name ‘Chef’s choice’ says, “I do not want to market my products in the local bakeries. Now it is available in a restaurant named Peppersalt in Muvattupuzha. My prime focus is to make these items available only in selective places. I have tie ups with ‘Smoke House’, Vytilla, Jaguar and Audi Showrooms,” says Naveen.Ask Naveen where the above automobile showrooms fit to these lip-smacking goodies, he says, “It is packed as a take away gift item for the customers there. So even the packing is made like that. All the goodies are packed in colourful nets and tied with glazing ribbons.”On an average Naveen sells 100 cakes a month and is planning to start a combo pack of the goodies where the foodies will get all the flavours of each of these cakes and chocolates in a single pack.
