Shakur Basti slum demolition leaves people suffering out in the cold, no help in sight

More than three days have passed since slums were demolished in Shakur Basti area of Delhi where 5,000 people were left homeless and a baby girl died just before the action. The slum dwellers have been forced to live in pathetic condition.

An IBN7 team went to Shakur Basti and found the situation horrifying. The very first scene the team saw was of two people sleeping out in the open on a the chilly winter night with temperature just 6 degree Celcius. They say that due to overcrowding in the tents they are forced to sleep outside.

The situation worsens near the toilet area as there are less than 40 toilets for over 5000 people that too most of them are locked.

If one goes to the other side of Shakur Basti, the area which is near the railway platform, the situation is horrific as well as painful. Soni, a woman living with her husband and four kids, is forced to live in a broken hut and in order to keep her family warm she is dependent on a bonfire.

Soni also claims that neither railways nor Delhi government officials have come to their help. People living in the chilly winter and an area infested with mosquitoes have been accusing government officials that be it blanket or food, it is only supplied in the other areas of Shakur Basti while they are always deprived of the same.

But all parties are playing politics and trying to show people that only they can help them. On the other hand courts have also rapped authorities for their insensitive attitude during the demolition and have ordered immediate rehabilitation of the affected persons.

But looking at the condition of these people one can say that nothing has been done. Railways as well as Delhi government will have to answer the following questions: What is the rehabilitation plan for the 5000 displaced people? What are the medical and food facilities? At what frequency are the people contacted by authorities.

What's your reaction?
