BANGALORE: A group of scientists from University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Gandhi Krishi Vignana Kendra (GKVK), Bangalore have come up with six new crop hybrids which will be released during the upcoming Krishi Mela to begin from November 16-20.Of the new hybrids there are three paddy varieties (JGL-1798, KHP-11 and KHP-12), one sugarcane (CoVC-99463), hybrid castor (DCH-177) and fodder sorghum (CoFS-29).Speaking to media persons about the speciality of the new crops, Dr H Shivanna, director of research, UAS, GKVK, said, “As per the UAS recommendation, a group of scientists were involved in the research project. The scientists were in the field for about 10-15 years, checking and conducting regular testings to come up with better yielding varieties which would benefit the farmers.”“The new paddy varieties yield 15-20 per cent more than the earlier BPP-5204 varieties. The time period required is just about 130-135 days in case of JGL-1798 which is much lesser than the existing varieties, and is suitable for Kharif as well as the summer,” he added. In addition, the water requirement by these new crops is half of what was required for the existing crops earlier. Shivanna said, “The new CoVC-99463 variety of sugarcane matures about two months earlier than the ones existing earlier and produces more sugar as well.”
