SRCC follows other DU colleges, takes back cut-off list, defers admissions
SRCC had issued a cut-off of 97.5 per cent for general category students for admission to its Commerce course.

New Delhi: Falling in line with other Delhi University-affiliated colleges, Shri Ram College of Commerce on Monday withdrew its first cut-off list and deferred the admission process. The move came hours after it issued a provisional cut-off list for its undergraduate Commerce course.

There has been an open war between the University Grants Commission and the Delhi University over the 4-year Undergraduate Program offered by the university. The UGC has asked the DU to admit students for 2014-15 in 3-year programme and not in the FYUP.

Even though the college released its cut-off list, there was no direction on whether it will be under FYUP or 3-year programme. The college authorities had said that they will do the admissions and then will decide which programme to follow as per University direction.

The college, ranked among the best in the country for higher studies in Commerce and Economics, issued a notice expressing regret for the inconvenience caused.

"In view of the resolution passed by the Principal's Association, Shri Ram College of Commerce has decided to defer the admission to the B.Com (H), and BA (H) 1st year till further orders. Inconvenience caused, if any, is deeply regretted," SRCC Principal P C Jain said.

SRCC had issued a cut-off of 97.5 per cent for general category students for admission to its Commerce course, while it was 95.50 per cent for OBC students, 93.25 per cent for SC and 90 per cent for ST.

The conflict between the UGC and the DU has hit the admissions process which was scheduled to begin on Tuesday. The Delhi University Principals Association has said that the admissions process will not start from Tuesday. It said, "Admission process will not start from tomorrow. There is a conflict in the DU guidelines and the UGC guidelines."

DUTA President Nandita Narain has said that the university must follow the UGC orders. She said, "The UGC has the power. The Delhi university should follow the UGC orders. The university will decide on the admission process. We have received no communication from the university."

During the day, National Student Union of India and Akhil Bharatiya Vikas Parishad students clashed over the issue during a television show. A professor of History was also assaulted during a discussion on a TV show by some students who were against the course. The Professsor has lodged an FIR against unknown students."

The Delhi University Student Union has also demanded the rollback of the FYUP. DUSU President Aman Awana said, "We want complete rollback of four year programme. B Tech degree for science courses will be retained. The next meeting will be within a week."

Meanwhile, teachers in favour of the four-year course have said they will stage a hunger strike from Tuesday.

The UGC has in its letter to DU colleges said that a contravention of the order could lead to serious action including withdrawal of grant facilities. In the letter to Delhi University colleges UGC Secretary Jaspal Singh Sandhu said, "I am directed to request that colleges shall admit students at the UG level for academic year 2014-2015 only to the 3-year UG programme which was offered by it prior to the introduction of the four year system and report compliance to the UGC soon after. Any deviation or contravention of this order shall be viewed seriously and may attract action including withdrawal of grant facilities."
