New Delhi: Veteran actress Suchitra Sen, who was also referred to as Greata Garbo of Bengali cinema, had over 60 films to her credit. The actress started her career in films with 'Shesh Kothaay' in 1952, which couldn't be released. However, the following year saw Suchitra share screen space with Uttam Kumar in Nirmal Dey's 'Sharey Chuattor'. Besides being a box-office hit, the film will always be remembered for launching Uttam-Suchitra as a popular pair. Post the success of the film, both Suchitra and Uttam emerged as the icons for Bengali dramas for over two decades.

Besides being the first Bengali actress to be awarded at an international film festival (she won Best Actress award for 'Saat Paake Bandha' in Moscow film festival 1963), the actress also received the Padma Shri in 1972 by the Government of India. The legendary actress refused to accept Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005, because she preferred to stay out of the public eye. In 2012, Banga Bibhushan, West Bengal government`s highest award, was conferred on Suchitra.

The actress, who suffered chest infection, and was undergoing treatment for it at the nursing home since December 23, breathed her last today. She was 82.
