The Nilgiris is one of the districts situated in Tamil Nadu. It is a hilly area where carrots, beetroot, beans, potatoes and cabbage are grown in large quantities. Now, a farmer from the Edakadu area (also known as Yedakadu) has cultivated groundnuts for the first time.
Farmer Vasant said that they have cultivated this as an attempt and it is yielding well. He also said that he learned to grow peanuts from YouTube. He pointed out that an old woman had cultivated groundnut in the Nilgiri district about 40 and 50 years ago and it was a good crop.
While talking to Local18, Vasant said, “My relatives in Coimbatore gave me groundnuts when they went home. We have cultivated this as an attempt and it is yielding well. I learned a lot about how to grow peanuts through YouTube. I will approach the horticulture department and clarify the doubts regarding this.”

It captured the scene from the field, showcasing a clear view of the lush green plants grown well in the field. Groundnut is mostly cultivated in the plains. In this case, the fact that groundnut has been grown in the hilly district of Nilgiris has surprised the farmers. Beans are also intercropped with groundnut.
The oilseed crop peanut is native to central South America. China, India and Nigeria are major producers of groundnut. These are a nutritionally dense food, rich in protein and fat. Groundnut is mostly eaten raw or roasted. Also, groundnut mixed with molasses is eaten as a sweet. They are rich in magnesium. It allows our body to absorb calcium from the food we eat. It also contains various nutrients like carbohydrates, fat, protein, vitamins and minerals. These are also rich in monounsaturated fats, which promote heart health by lowering bad cholesterol.
