New Delhi: A 17-year-old girl is in serious condition after shooting herself. According to the police Rashmi Maurya, a resident of Noida's sector 56, shot herself with a revolver reportedly belonging to her father, at the busy Kondli crossing in East Delhi.

She was traveling with her parents in a car when she apparently took out the gun and shot herself.

Rashmi has been admitted to the Metro Hospital with serious head injuries.

According to the police, she was upset with her boyfriend's family not agreeing to their plans to marry.

IANS report says police have detained her boyfriend Hitesh and his mother for questioning. Police were also interrogating the victim's parents.

“We met in the morning. Virender Morya had asked my son to reject any marriage proposal from the girl. Both families were trying to make the children understand the situation. But she stood up, went and shot herself,” IANS quoted Hitesh's mother saying.

The police said the two knew each other for more than two years and they stayed friends after Hitesh dropped out of school. The girl's family lives in Sector-56 of Noida, while the boy stays with his parents in Khoda.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Delhi) Ajay Chaudhry told IANS no case was registered yet and they were recording statements of the two families.

“A case would be registered only after initial investigations,” he said.

Asked about action taken against the victim's father for keeping a loaded firearm in the glove compartment of his car, Chaudhry said: “No action has been taken yet”.
