KOCHI: Foolproof security was provided to the two accused Italian Marines when they were taken to Karunagappally on Monday. The Kerala police convoy, guarding the duo of Latorre Massimilano and Salvatore Girone, had more than fifty personnel, including a quick reaction team consisting of 25 armed personnel and one pilot officer.They were taken in two separate vehicles accompanied by the Italian consulate secretary. The convoy was led by Kollam SP Sam Christy Daniel.Every police station along the way to Karunagappally was alerted and monitored by police personnel from each district following an intelligence alert about a possible attack on the marines of the Italian vessel Enrica Lexie. Kerala Shipping Boat Operators Association general secretary Joseph Xavier said the fishermen community were agitated over the death of the two fishermen.“The police personnel had informed to take all precautions as the fishermen community were irked by the deaths. We were planing to take out a protest rally while the accused were taken to the magistrate court, but cancelled it when requested by the police,” Joseph Xavier said.
