Office-goers and visitors had a tough time on Wednesday with hotels and restaurants remaining closed. City residents also were put to hardship with medical shops joining the strike till 1 pm

Shops and establishments in the capital remained shut for the better part of the day on Wednesday following the strike called by the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi (KVVES).

Office-goers and visitors to the city had a tough time with hotels and restaurants remaining closed. City residents also were put to hardship with medical shops joining the strike till 1 pm. By late afternoon, many shops, especially those in the interior areas, had rolled up shutters.

The KVVES had called the 12-hour strike to protest against FDI in retail and the alleged excesses by the Food Safety Commissioner’s office.

KVVES district president Peringamala Ramachandran said that the strike was a complete success in the district. ‘’We have around one lakh members in the district. They all co-operated,’’ he said.

In the morning, the KVVES also took out a protest march to the office of the Food Safety Commissioner.

All Roads Led to ‘Prison’

The ‘chapati’ counter at the Poojappura Central Prison saw a heavy surge of buyers on Wednesday after the hotels in the city remained closed following a strike called by the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi.

Hundreds of buyers turned up at the counter in front of the jail premises to buy chapati and chicken and vegetable curries.

Central prison Superintendent B Pradeep said that more than 40,000 chapatis, 4,000 chicken curry and 2,000 vegetable curry were sold out on the day.
