THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The UDF Government on Thursday got through the first litmus test in the Assembly by getting elected its nominee G Karthikeyan as the Speaker of the House. In a close contest, Karthikeyan polled 73 votes, including that of the nominated member and protem Speaker, while LDF nominee A K Balan got 68 votes. The election was conducted through secret ballots.Protem Speaker N Sakthan's decision to cast his vote created a row with Kodiyeri Balakrishnan (CPM) terming it as "violation of the Constitution". Kodiyeri opined that the presiding officer should vote only in case of a tie.But Law Minister K M Mani cited precedence in the House of protem Speaker casting his vote.He claimed that if there is precedence then the House could go with it.
