COIMBATORE: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has decided to increase the post-doctoral fellowship for research scholars under the SC/ST category, besides extending the tenure.As of now, researchers under this category are being provided an amount of Rs 16,000 per month for two years, which was revised in September 2006. Prior to 2006, they were provided Rs 12,000 a month.Now, the UGC has decided to increase the amount to Rs 25,000 per month for the first two years and Rs 30,000 per month from the third year. The commission has also decided to extend the tenure of the fellowship to five years from the present three years. The decision was taken at the UGC’s 484th meeting held on April 27.Apart from this, the UGC has also decided to increase the contingency amount to Rs 50,000 per annum for five years from the earlier Rs 30,000 per annum for two years.The UGC has also decided to constitute a committee under the chairmanship of Prof Yogendra Yadav, a member of the commission, to ensure parity in all existing fellowship and scholarship schemes of UGC.
