CUTTACK: The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Cuttack, will take custody of the newborn twin girls, who were allegedly abandoned by their parents at the Cuttack Railway Station on Saturday evening. The girls, who were found concealed in a cardboard carton at the Platform No. 1, are being treated at the neonatal unit of the Paediatric wing of SCB Medical here. Grossly underweight at 1,200 gm and 960 gm, the twins are vulnerable to infections and complications and therefore would be kept under medical supervision till their condition improves and they are ready to adapt to open environment. “The SCB Medical is bearing all cost of the treatment of the babies. They will be produced before CWC after they gain normal health parameters. The babies are also kept under round-the-clock watch to prevent any eventuality,” Medical Officer Dr Bhuban Mohan Moharana said. The district Childline has also stationed its personnel at the medical to maintain continuous vigil. There are possibilities of people coming in and demanding the children by claiming to be their parents or relatives. There are even possibilities of stealing. Every person would be screened, sources said. District CWC Chairman Dr SN Dash said the twins would be in the hospital till they attain proper physical health. They would then be taken over the by the Committee and placed at an orphanage. Only then would claims for the child be entertained.“We have heard reports of people coming forward for adoption. But due procedures would be followed in accordance with law if requests and appeals come up after the twins are handed over to us,” said Dr Dash.
