Vishakapatanam: A young woman Maoist named Vanthala Jhansi alias Kusai, carrying a Rs 1 lakh reward on her head surrendered before the outgoing Superintendent of Police Vikramjeet Duggal at the district police office on Thursday.

The 22-year-old Jhansi, a native of Nallabilli village under Koyyuru mandal in Vizag agency joined the Maoists around six years ago and worked in the outfit as Maoist squad member in Korukonda and Galikonda areas committees.

SP Duggal said that Jhansi was involved in about 10 offences, including exchange of fire with the police at Cheruvuru, Luvvasingi and Yerracheruvu.

She also took part in offences such as famine raids, attacks on people, planting landmines and damage of public properties.

The police said that she surrendered because she was disillusioned with the Maoists' way of life.

On this occasion Duggal appealed to Maoists to shun violence and surrender before cops for a peaceful life.
