Mumbai: While visiting Lalbaugh Cha Raja, we bumped into a 21-year-old student Rushab Surastri from Saint Xavier's college, who had come with his mother to visit the Pandal. Rushab, a third year management student, shared his thoughts on the usage of ceramide and Plaster Of Paris to make Ganesha's idols which further add to the increasing pollution in the city.
Here's an excerpt from our interaction with this 21-year-old.
1. How many Mandals have you visited so far?
I have just visited Siddhivinayak and LalbaughCha Raja. I like the way the pandals have been adorned. They have used a lot of gold which we are getting to know through newspapers.
2. How do you celebrate this 10-day long festival?
During the 10-day long festival, we usually go for social visits. It is an amazing community gathering. The spirit of solidarity is enhanced and protected by the festival.
3. Are you planning to go for the Visarjan with your friends?
I am not planning to go to the Visarjan as I don’t believe in polluting the environment. The bigger idols in the city are not eco-friendly and they are made of Ceramide and Plaster of Paris. They should be using clay idols which can be submersed easily.
4. How well organised is the festival this time?
Traffic management is pretty good and the money they have collected should be used for social causes.
5. What all delicacies do you savour during the course of these 10 days?
Apart from amazing Modaks, we eat Piasama. In Konkani, they celebrate Ganpati in the most eco-friendly way by decorating coconuts and flowers. Gazbaza is another thing I love to eat. It is a gravy made from 37 vegetables. They make fried chips. This happens in a few Konkani households.
