Amitabh Bachchan Backs Kolkata Giants In Latest KBC Episode: 'I'm Team Mohun Bagan'
A sports-related question led Amitabh Bachchan to cheekily ask the contestant whether he played football.

Amitabh Bachchan, one of the biggest superstars of Bollywood, has not only entertained viewers through films but also charmed millions as the host of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). His friendly and warm personality, coupled with his occasional, light conversations about his own life makes the quiz show much more appealing for viewers. In KBC 16’s most recent episode, Bachchan again delighted the viewers by sharing a lesser-heard aspect of his life – his love for a football club.

The discussion happened during the show that featured a participant from West Bengal. A sports-related question led Bachchan to cheekily ask the contestant whether he played football. He then playfully suggested that it seemed stupid to even ask a Bengali about it because everyone there is obsessed with football.

Asking the contestant about his favourite team Mohun Bagan or East Bengal, the contestant expressed that he supported the former. This excited Bachchan and he said, “Aye Shabash, I am team Mohun Bagan too.”

It was not just an appreciation from the superstar but a long-standing affection dating back to his early days in Kolkata. In 2011, Bachchan referred to himself as a “Mohun Bagan supporter” as the legendary football team wrapped off the centenary anniversary of their historic 1911 triumph.

“For the first time, when I had landed in Kolkata at Howrah Stadium with my father, there was a Mohun Bagan match. I remember going there and watching it. When you are in Kolkata, supporting Mohun Bagan becomes an automatic choice. I want to see Mohun Bagan go further and get more success,” Bachchan was quoted by NDTV at that time.

The rivalry between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal is arguably one of the most heated ones in the world of football. These two rival clubs began their formation during British rule in India when the country saw a socially and politically turbulent period. Mohun Bagan was formed to promote pride in the nation and East Bengal was formed to represent the Bengali community of East Bengal (now Bangladesh).

Meanwhile, Amitabh Bachchan last appeared in Kalki 2898 AD alongside Deepika Padukone, Prabhas and Kamal Haasan. The movie was directed by Nag Ashwin and is set in the post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD. Kalki 2898 AD intervenes in Indian mythology with sci-fi, primarily based on Kalki, the last avatar of Lord Vishnu.

In the flick, Amitabh Bachchan has stepped into the shoes of Ashwatthama who is one of the oldest characters of Hindu mythology. His character is depicted as a weary warrior with a dreadful past who is determined to fulfil his destiny. Ashwatthama’s task is to find Sumathi and protect her unborn child, who represents hope for humanity’s future.
