Greta Gerwig’s film Barbie emerged as one of the major cinematic successes of 2023, even surpassing the billion-dollar mark in box office earnings. Starring acclaimed actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in pivotal roles, the blockbuster not only captivated audiences worldwide but also propelled Gerwig to become the highest-grossing female director of all time. As the film continues to garner attention at prestigious award ceremonies, fans eagerly speculate whether a sequel to Barbie is on the horizon.
Amid a lot of expectations and speculations, the award-winning filmmaker finally has an answer to this as Gerwig believes that “it will only happen when she comes across the right story.”
Speaking at Time’s Women of the Year presentation, the filmmaker remained pretty straightforward and said, “If I find the undertow, then we get it. If I don’t find an undertow, there’s no more.”
Further reflecting on the billions of dollars that Barbie made, Greta Gerwig added, “It’s something that I loved making so much. And I loved the world that we built so much and all of the actors and the idea of getting to be with that group of people again is very exciting.”
Speaking about her admiration for the first film, Gerwig shared that it was the “story underneath the story” that made her love Barbie. “I remember going to Toys R Us and looking at Barbies and I loved their hair. And I loved everything about them and my mom was not sure about it. And I find that’s the story, that’s the generational story…I’m always trying to find those undertows,” she added.
Earlier in a conversation with Variety, the Barbie star also shared her response regarding the film’s sequel. Stating that it has become a norm for everyone to ask for a sequel, she added “I don’t think it was like that 20 years ago. This wasn’t designed to be a trilogy. Everything went into Barbie and that’s how Greta works. She finishes every movie on empty, feeling like she could never make another movie.”
Robbie also explained that she isn’t sure about what it would take for her to do the role for the second time.
“We want to make more films that have the effect that the film has. I don’t know if it has to be Barbie 2. Why can’t it be another big and bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that,” she concluded.
