Tenacious D fans will have to wait a bit longer for the band’s next big return as Jack Black and Kyle Gass are currently taking a well-deserved break. At the red carpet event for his upcoming movie Borderlands, Jack Black updated fans on their status, confirming that Tenacious D will indeed make a comeback, though they need some time off. This announcement follows the abrupt cancellation of their tour last month, which was sparked by a controversial remark made by Gass about a 20-year-old who attempted to shoot former President Donald Trump but missed. Despite the tour’s cancellation, Jack Black reassured fans that his friendship with Gass remains as strong as ever.
Speaking to Variety, Jack Black said, “We need to take a break. Everybody needs a break sometime. And we’ll be back.” Further, when the interviewer asked if he’s been in touch with his bandmate since the comment, the actor-singer replied, “Yeah, we’re friends. That hasn’t changed. These things take time sometimes. And we’ll be back when it feels right.”
For those who might not know, during Tenacious D’s performance at the ICC Sydney Theatre on July 14, Jack Black made a surprise for Kyle Gass’s 64th birthday by presenting him with a cake on stage. When Jack Black asked Gass to make a wish, he jokingly said, “Don’t miss Trump next time.” The comment led to a backlash, and Gass subsequently apologised on Instagram (a post that has since been deleted), explaining that the remark was unscripted and not intended to offend. Black also addressed the incident on Instagram, revealing that he was caught off guard by Gass’s comment and decided to end the tour.
The Gulliver’s Travels star wrote, “I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
