Movies Don't Have To Be Led By Men To Be Hits: Kriti Sanon On Female-oriented Films
Kriti Sanon said that filmmakers often feel that viewers are not interested in "women-oriented" films.

Actress Kriti Sanon said in an interview that the success of her latest film Crew will pave the way for more big-budget films starring women. The National Award winner plays one of the three leads alongside Tabu and Kareena Kapoor in the film, which has grossed over Rs 100 crore worldwide within nine days of release. Directed by Rajesh A Krishnan, Crew is a heist comedy about three air hostesses who take control of their destiny when their airline goes bankrupt. The film also stars Diljit Dosanjh, Kapil Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Saswata Chatterjee and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

Kriti said that filmmakers often feel that viewers are not interested in “women-oriented” films. She added, “A film doesn’t have to be led by a man to draw audiences to the cinema. For a long time, people haven’t taken the risk of scaling female-centric films as they do with male-centric films. They feel that audiences aren’t coming to the theatre anymore and they’re not going to get the money back.”

“I hope this is at least the beginning of a change. Slowly, I hope that people will take the risk of spending the same amount of money on a woman-led film as they would on a man-led film because that also results in the same numbers at the box office,” she added.

Citing the 2022 film Gangubai Kathiawadi, the 33-year-old actress said director Sanjay Leela Bhansali made the film with Alia Bhatt on a grand scale and the film was both a critical and commercial success.

“He presented his woman character, like, for lack of a better word, a hero. Usually, the budget of films that have only female protagonists is limited. People don’t believe that these films will draw audiences to the theatres the way a man-led film does,” Kriti Sanon said.

Kriti is now looking forward to the release of Do Patti, which also marks her production debut with her company Blue Butterfly Films. In the film, which is slated to release on Netflix later this year, Kriti will reunite with her Dilwale co-star Kajol.
