Everyone was left shocked recently when a video of Pakistani singer Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan thrashing his disciple went viral on social media. While many condemned the singer’s actions, he has also now finally opened up about the incident. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was talking to Adeel Asif on his podcast recently when he shared that he has already apologised to Naveed, his shagird (protege).

“I did apologise to him. He started crying and said, ‘Ustaad ji (Sir) why are you doing this?’” Rahat Fateh Ali Khan said. “Baap ka jaise role hota hai. Shagird ki baap hone ki jarurat hai. Humne woh role hi adaa kia hai (I am his teacher. I have played the role of his father),” the singer added.

Khan further opened up about the social media backlash he faced for his actions and claimed that the disciple had stolen his “holy water”. “He is my protege and I accepted that I scolded and trashed him. Later I apologised. Till this point, it was fine but people are making fun of it. But the truth is he had my holy water with him. People are not understanding the intensity of the situation. It’s a very serious matter for me as it involves my spiritual guide,” he said.

Last week, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan stirred a massive controversy after a video of him assaulting an individual inside the premises of his house went viral on social media. The clip showed the singer allegedly demanding liquor from an individual and physically assaulting him in front of a crowd.

However, the singer later issued a clarification video and revealed that the man in the video was his disciple. “Ye Jo hua videos aap dekh rahe hai, ye ek Ustad aur Shagird ke beech ki baat hai,” he said. Khan further argued that the bottle he was asking for in the viral clip didn’t contain liquor; instead, it had holy water from a religious cleric who recited verses over it.
