Mastan Mirza, aka, Haji Mastan or Sultan Mirza was a crime gang leader who hailed from Tamil Nadu and later settled down in Bombay (now Mumbai). He was an infamous mafia gang leader who ruled the Bombay underworld for over two decades from the 1960s to the early 1980s along with Karim Lala and Varadarajan Mudaliar.
Haji Mastan was infamous for his smuggling business and earned quite a reputation for himself. He established his empire in Mumbai by the 1970s. He was known to be a man of taste who loved to wear white suits and drove a Mercedes. He loved to smoke exotic cigars. With his rise as a mafia in the underworld, he also helped Karim Lala and Varadarajan Mudaliar.
The underworld don reportedly financed movies and held an influential position in the city of Bombay. However, just like every other person, he too fell in love with Bollywood’s living Taj Mahal or India’s Marilyn Monroe, Madhubala. He wanted to marry her. However, her death in 1969 reportedly broke his heart.
At that time, another actress shot to fame because of her resemblance to Madhubala. Actress Sona was as tall as Madhubala, had a similar smile, and had similar eyes and the resemblance was uncanny. It was no surprise that she gained immense fame. Meanwhile, Haji Mastan was in awe after seeing Sona. He was a producer and had invested money in her debut movie. He proposed to her for marriage to which she agreed.
After tying the nuptial know to Haji Mastan, Sona left the glamorous industry. She has worked in movies like Aadamkhor, Awara Badal, Kuchhe Dhaage, Bikhare Moti, Kasam Durga Ki, Kaise Kaise Log, Meena Kumari Ki Amar Kahani and Atyachaar. She also starred in Biwi Kiraya Ki and Badnam Farishte. After marrying Haji Mastan, she chose to take care of the family. There are reports that Sona lived a life of luxury while Haji Mastan was alive. However, after Haji’s death she faced a lot of troubles, especially after her husband’s family took over all his property. The actress died in August 2014.
