London: Not a single day has passed when Indo-Canadian adult star Sunny Leone has not remained in news, ever since she flew down to India, five years back. Ms Leone’s stint in the 'Bigg Boss' house in 2011, introduced her to the Indian audience, which further fuelled up their imagination.
More than a dozen movies featuring Sunny has offered sufficient dose of sleaze on screen. Debuting with 'Jism 2' directed by Pooja Bhatt, followed by Ekta Kapoor’s 'Ragini MMS 2', Sunny’s films were released without any disruption. This year saw two movies starring Sunny in the lead- a reincarnation drama 'Ek Paheli Leela' and adult comedy 'Kuch Kuch Locha Hai' opposite Ram Kapoor, which again was well received by Sunny’s loyal fans.
Sunny spent several weeks inside the 'Bigg Boss' house and was the first reality show contestant offered 'Jism 2' by acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt on national TV. Family audience, despite knowing Sunny’s background refused to object, as everyone secretly wanted to see more of her in the Indian showbiz. She is the mentor of 'MTV Splitsvilla' for the second consecutive season, which again has been approved by the family audience.
The condom ad laced with optimum dose of eroticism, featuring Sunny has made way to Indian living rooms, ever since she entered Indian showbiz. It was only recently that Sunnybecame responsible for rape, when CPI leader Atul Anjan pointed it out and made a demand to impose a ban on these advertisements. Anjan suggested that the racy nature of the ads were the reason behind rapid increase in rape incidences in India. If Anjan’s comment were not bizarre enough, then a few social activists made Sunny Leone feel more important by staging a protest against her at Jantar Mantar. “Sunny Leone wapas jaao, mere desh mein gandh na failo (Sunny Leone go back, don’t spread filth in our country),” said the protestors.
If one had to take these social activists seriously, the protest clearly gave an indication that India had never heard of porn before the arrival of Sunny. Anjan’s comment was meant to believe that rape never took place in India before the Sunny’s condom ad was aired. Sunny has been surviving criticism by the likes of Rakhi Sawant and Celina Jaitley, who are apparently rented out her apartment to Sunny. But, it was only recently that politicians and social activists have brought Sunny Leone to limelight through these controversies.
While the moral police is busy blaming Sunny for immorality, the filmmakers are missing no chance to piggybacking on her. An item song by Sunny is sufficient to pull the crowd, thus, a suggestive 'Baby Doll' in 'Hate Story 2' and 'Laila tujhe lut legi' in Shootout At Wadala helped in drawing more audience.
If anything that Sunny Leone controversy confirms, it is the prevailing hypocrisy in our society. A group of people use the actress (who has been honest about her background and profession) as a scapegoat for spreading sleaze and then there is another group that uses the so called sleaze to make fast bucks.
