The actor passed away on December 4, 2017, at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness. In one of his last interviews, he opened up about his wife Jennifer Kendal and why he never remarried after her death in 1984.
Pinkvilla quoted him as saying, “When I saw Jennifer I was 18, and I immediately wanted to marry her…” It was earlier reported that Shashi wanted to marry Jennifer when he was 18, but his father Prithviraj Kapoor felt that he was too young to get married. The two had reportedly met in Calcutta while working for their respective theatre groups.

He also recalled her influence on his illustrious career in films. He said that during the 70s, he was not happy with his career and sought advice from Jennifer. “She asked me to do what I wanted to do. So we built a theatre (Prithvi) and I made Junoon, Kalyug, 36 Chowringhee Lane, Vijayta, and Utsav. They bombed!”
