As many as 78 opposition MPs, who were protesting over the Parliament security breach incident, were suspended from both houses on Monday for their alleged misconduct and disruption in the proceedings.
Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha Piyush Goyal said Congress and its allies insulted Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha chairperson Jagdeep Dhankhar with their conduct. “They did not want the House to run smoothly, this was their pre-planned strategy,” he said.
A total of 45 opposition members were suspended from the Rajya Sabha and 33 MPs from the Lok Sabha, taking the number of total suspended MPs so far from the winter session to 92, an unprecedented number of suspensions in a single session.
Stormy scenes were witnessed in Parliament after a major security breach on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack (December 13) in which two persons — Sagar Sharma and Manoranjan D — jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the visitors’ gallery, set off yellow coloured smoke from canisters and shouted slogans before being overpowered by some MPs and watch and ward staff.
The opposition has been pressing for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home to make statements on the floor of the House over the security breach incident.
Earlier on December 15, TMC member Derek O’Brien was suspended from the Rajya Sabha for “unruly behaviour” and “misconduct”. On the other hand, 13 Lok Sabha MPs belonging to the opposition were also suspended for the remainder of the winter session, which started on December 4 and is scheduled to continue till December 22.
