The debatable dismissal of Angelo Mathews during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 seems to have polarised opinions among former cricketers.
Mathews, on Monday, became the first ever batter in international cricket to be timed out after an appeal from Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan.
The umpire deemed the Sri Lankan allrounder to have exceeded the permitted time limit of two minutes to be ready to face a delivery which results in dismissal.

Mathews argued he had arrived on time and upon realising his helmet strap was broken, had instantly called for a replacement which resulted in the delay.
Shakib should learn from Rohit sharma https://t.co/9TqBgdnsuP— Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) November 7, 2023
Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif has criticised Shakib for not withdrawing the appeal and asked him to learn from India captain Rohit Sharma.
“Shakib should Learn from Rohit Sharma,” Kaif quoted an older post of his on X (formerly Twitter) in which he had praised Rohit for his leadership after withdrawing a run out appeal during an ODI between India and Sri Lanka.
Absolutely rubbish firstly asking by Shakib and thn umpires giving Angelo Matthew’s out like that totally nonsense #patheticrules #BANvSL @Angelo69Mathews @ICC— Harbhajan Turbanator (@harbhajan_singh) November 6, 2023

Earlier this year, Mohammed Shami had removed the bails at the non striker’s end after spotting Shanaka was backing up too far.
Shanaka was on 98 and his team needed 83 runs off three deliveries.
However, Rohit withdrew the appeal and Shanaka went on to complete his century.
“I had no idea Shami did that and then went for an appeal,” Rohit had said after the match. “Again, he is batting on 98. The way he batted was brilliant, we’ve got to give it to him. We cannot get him out like that. We wanted to get him out the way we thought we would get him out, but that was not something that we thought of.”
Addressing the controversy during a media interaction, Mathews had said Shakib could’ve withdrawn the appeal and this wouldn’t have happened if it was any other team.
“Yes, Shakib had the option of – he knew that this was not time-wasting or I was there within my time. And he had the choice of, but he decided to go the other way. And my personal opinion is, if it was any other team, they wouldn’t have done it,” Mathews said.
