Crimes against women is a serious issue in this country. Eve-teasing, domestic violence, rapes and molestations are commonplace. And yes, a lot of men are at fault. But is it in any way justifiable to taint all men with a ‘sex-offender’ or a ‘rapist’ tag?
Is it not wrong to say that all men are the same? Because they aren’t. Generalizing the male gender for being rapists or sex-offenders is the same as generalizing the female gender for being weak and emotional.
To put an end to stereotype like this, Mintified started a campaign with the idea #BlameOneNotAll. It featured several women holding placards with messages that talked about how certain men in their lives made them feel safer and better.
According to Mintified, they “do agree that a woman has to go through a lot; the leering, the catcalls, the groping, the societal othering, the miasma of all this that women bear the brunt of every damn day. Every single day is a war to them. But generalizing the other gender is not right. Not all men are rapists. Not all men abuse their significant others. Not all men actively oppress women.”
The idea seemed like a solid one. They weren’t downgrading the struggles of being a woman by pointing out the struggles of men. They weren’t creating a ‘battle of the sexes’ kind of scenario. They were just pointing out that not all men are to be blamed. Not all men can be tainted with the same brush. Seems fair right? Apparently not.
This campaign was not at all received well. There was a stream of outrage from feminists and they all seemed to feel that this was only highlighting the fact that women are sexist.
Seriously what are the men in this woman’s life like, that her non-creepy uncle is the stand out? #BlameOneNotAll pic.twitter.com/1EqnsImMNo— Seja (@Seja75) May 26, 2015
Seriously, #BlameOneNotAll makes me sick. We should reward and applaud men for being decent human beings? This stinks on all fronts. Vile.— BuffaloCrone (@CorineJN) May 26, 2015
Look it doesnt matter how decent a man you are,you benefit from being a privileged class in an unequal society, you just do. #BlameOneNotAll— Audioseal (@AudioSeal1) May 26, 2015
#BlameOneNotAll Not raping women is easy. You don’t get a trophy for it.— May Malaise (@dyrbert) May 26, 2015
Sorry, but the only way I can guarantee my safety is to be suspicious of all men. My life’s more important than yr feelings #BlameOneNotAll— let that hoe hoe (@desiredxthings) May 27, 2015
#BlameOneNotAll because men’s feelings about how women discuss sexism matter more than the abuses women deal with— Imperator Castrasia (@the_author_) May 26, 2015
#BlameOneNotAll is bullshit cos men shouldn’t need a pat on the back for not being rapists/sexist & #YesAllWomen have experienced sexism— Penny Lane (@jess_dicky) May 27, 2015
The hypocrisy is more than evident in the last tweet, because claiming only one gender can be sexist is not wrong at all, isn’t it?
