'Virat Kohli Never Does That..': Gavaskar Schools Shreyas Iyer For 'Throwing Away' Wicket Against Bangladesh
Sunil Gavaskar slammed Shreyas Iyer for losing his patience and throwing his wicket against Bangladesh, adding that Virat Kohli would never do that.

Shreyas Iyer brought up his maiden World Cup 2023 half-century against Pakistan in Ahmedabad. Iyer’s unbeaten 53 was a breather for India who desperately wanted the 28-year-old to perform well at the number four spot. But in the very next fixture against Bangladesh, Iyer failed with the bat having been dismissed for 19.

Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar was quite livid with the manner in which Iyer lost his wicket during the game against Bangladesh. While speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar said that Iyer had lost “his patience.” Iyer was dismissed by all-rounder Mahmudullah in the 30th over of the match.

“He [Shreyas Iyer] lost his patience. He was batting on 19, and threw his wicket away. Shubman Gill [was batting on] fifty [52], threw his wicket away,” Gavaskar pointed out.

Gavaskar even went on to cite Virat Kohli’s example suggesting that the batters should learn from the former India captain. Kohli remained unbeaten against Bangladesh having pulled off a sublime century. Kohli has been in fine form at the World Cup and he has already amassed 265 runs in the competition. Kohli is currently the third-highest scorer at the ODI World Cup. Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan claims the top spot on the list with 294 runs to his name, followed by Rohit Sharma.

“Kohli never does that. He will seldom ever throw his wicket away. He makes you earn his wicket and that is exactly what you need. When he got to 70-80, he realised that he has an opportunity to get to a hundred and why not? Hundreds don’t come every day,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

The century against Bangladesh was Virat Kohli’s 48th hundred in the ODI format. He now needs one more century to match Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time record of ODI hundreds. Kohli’s spectacular knock of 103 not out guided India to a resounding seven-wicket victory against Bangladesh. Chasing a total of 257, Rohit Sharma’s men scored the winning runs with 51 balls to spare.

The win against Bangladesh helped hosts India to keep their unbeaten run alive at the World Cup. With four wins from as many games, India are placed in second position in the World Cup 2023 standings.

In their next match, India will be up against table-toppers New Zealand on Sunday, October 22. The fixture between India and New Zealand is scheduled to be played at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala.
