Thiruvananthapuram: Troubles for Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala just doesn't seem to be getting over. Police have now arrested National Secretary of BJP's Minority Morcha Aslam Gurukkal on charges of attempt to kidnap, criminal tresspassing and threatening a businessman in Malappuram.
Jaleel Thottathil, Malappuram DYSP told reporters that "a gang of seven who entered the premises of Rabiullah, a businessman in Malappuram and demanded to see him. The businessman was under treatment and they tried to threaten the people in the house with pistols. The public gathered and informed the police.”
Police apprehended all seven assailants including Gurukkal and remanded them in judicial custody.
In another case, state sleuths have registered a case of cheating against M P Rajan, BJP'S zonal secretary. Rajan is accused of taking Rs 1.5 lakh, promising a job in military services. Complainant Ashwath said that Rajan took the cash in two instalments in July 2016 and February 2017.
A case has been registered under sections 420 and 406 of the IPC for cheating and criminal breach of trust. The police have initiated a probe into these allegations.
These two are now part of a string of corruption cases that have rocked the state BJP in the last one month.
The first case to hit media headlines pertained to allegations of bribes being paid to one of state unit leaders for to get Medical Council of India (MCI) approval for a private college. In a major embarrassment to the party, report of a committee formed by the state president to look into the allegations of MCI scandal was leaked to the media.
There were also reports of an enquiry related to the election expenditure by BJP candidates in Kerala.
In the shadow of these allegations, State President Kummanam Rajkashekaran has written an emotional letter to party workers. He said that the incident, referring to corruption allegations against Vinod, was not of corruption by the party but of an individual trying to use the party name and that they have taken a strong action immediately. He asked the workers to take a pledge not to betray the organisation for individual interests and enmity.
Rajashekaran has also criticised the CPM and Congress saying that many of their leaders are corrupt and have also been found guilty by many agencies. "Those who are spreading fake news can only be seen as the enemy of the party," he said, reminding workers of internal unity at this time.
