New Delhi: Will the daughter of late Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh be able to break the jinx in the known Congress stronghold of Jalandhar Cantonment constituency? That’s the big question, which has become a matter of intense discussion in the area.
The track record of the constituency, represented by the assassinated Chief Minister in 1992 and later by his son Tej Prakash Singh in 1997 and currently by his daughter Gurkanwal Kaur, is that no MLA was re-elected from the area.
Kaur is seeking re-election from the constituency as a Congress candidate in a 13-cornered contest, which includes Shiromani Akali Dal's fresh face Jagbir Brar, a relative of party supremo Parkash Singh Badal.
The Akali Dal candidate, who has been Block Development Officer in the area till he jumped into the election fray, has been fighting hard and has been on the move after early announcement of his candidature.
In Gidderbaha constituency in Muktsar district, a known Akali Dal bastion, the SAD nominee Manpreet Singh Badal is in the battle field of multi-cornered contest.
With Raghubir Singh getting the Congress nomination, a local leader Sant Singh Brar has revolved and is contesting an independent from this seat, which once returned the Akali Dal supremo Parkash Singh Badal.
Congress is playing the development card in the constituency where the Akali Dal candidate and sitting MLA had defeated the Congress nominee by 17,000 votes last time.
However in Moga, Akali Dal's Tota Singh is pitted against newcomer Joginder Pal Jain of Congress who has been President of the municipal council.
The Congress nominee is, however, facing dissidence with several local leaders working against him as they failed to get the ticket.
Tota Singh is a former Education Minister who has been an MLA for two terms.
