New Delhi: Delhi's state Election Commission on Thursday decided to allow eunuchs to fight the next month's civic polls as per their status enrolled in the voters' list.

The Commission came out with an order, stating that eunuchs, whose sex in the voters' list have been mentioned as "other" will be able to contest from the wards under general category.

State Election Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, rejecting demand of a number of eunuchs to allow them to contest in the seats reserved for women, however, said eunuchs who have enrolled their names in voters' list as women, will be able to

fight the polls from the seats reserved for the fair sex.

"Only the eunuchs who have registered their status as 'women' will be able to contest from the seats reserved for women. Eunuchs registered under other category will have to contest from the general category seats," Mehta said.

Fifty per cent of the total 272 seats are reserved for women and eunuchs, who approached the Commission, had demanded allowing them to fight from the reserved seats for the fair sex.

"We have taken the decision as per an order issued by the Election Commission of India in 2009," Mehta said.

In November, 2009 the Election Commission had allowed the eunuchs and transsexuals to indicate their sex as 'Other' in the electoral rolls.

Polls for the trifurcated MCD will be held on April 15.
