New Delhi: It was a piece of clothing designed to dazzle the world. But a closer scrutiny of the dark pinstripe suit worn by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during US President Barack Obama's visit revealed that what looked like thin strips were actually his name embroidered on it repeatedly.
The entire suit and pant had Narendra Damodardas Modi repeatedly embroidered into the fabric. As soon as the fact came to notice Modi was attacked by his rivals as being megalomaniac and narcissist.
Modi's suit which reportedly cost about Rs 10 lakh also became an issue during the recent Delhi Assembly elections and is possibly one of the reasons behind Bharatiya Janata Party's humiliating rout at the hands of Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party.
But Modi is not the only Indian politician who is self obsessed although he expressed his displeasure over a temple in Gujarat which had his bust installed. While that temple in Kotharia village near Rajkot has now been demolished, there are many leaders who have displayed such behaviour.
Below is a list of a few politicians who have had their statues and temples.
Mayawati: In this race of self love, no one can beat Bahujan Samaj Party supremo and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati. Over 200 statues of her and BSP symbol elephant were built in Lucknow and Noida.
Mamata Banerjee: In 2014, a museum in Kolkata known as 'Mother's Wax Museum' unveiled a wax statue of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The wax statue of Banerjee shows her working in her office. It was inaugurated in November 2014.
Sonia Gandhi: A Congress leader in Andhra Pradesh had built a temple for party President Sonia Gandhi in January, 2014. Leaked pictures showed Sonia as the officiating deity in the temple built by Shankar Rao, a legislator from Andhra Pradesh. Dismissing accusations of sycophancy, Rao said the temple for Sonia is his way of showing gratitude to the Congress President for creating a separate Telangana state.
The temple attracted a lot of attention and people mocked at the sycophant nature of the Congress leader.
J Jayalalithaa: An ardent follower of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa had built a statue from human blood. The statue was made of 11 litres of frozen blood and it was unveiled on her birthday in 2013. The statue created a stir and everyone was shocked to see the blind affection of the follower.
Vasundhara Raje: In 2007, a poster was released in Rajasthan depicting Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje as Goddess Annapurna. The poster attracted a lot of negative publicity.
Nitish Kumar: In 2005, verses were written in praise of JDU leader and then Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar. The verses were titled Nitish Chalisa, on the lines of religious text written in the honour of Lord Hanuman. The writer of Nitish Chalisa chants was PS Dayal.
Lalu Prasad: During former Bihar CM Lalu Prasad's regime, one of his ardent followers had penned 'Lalu Charit Manas' projecting him as an incarnation of Lord Krishna
