It’s just been a week since we entered 2019, and the first big tech expo has already begun. Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is one of the biggest stages when it comes to showcasing the latest tech innovations, and like always, we are witnessing a number of early announcements from a bunch of big names.
HP made a bunch of announcements including new notebooks, and a giant gaming display. Here's everything you need to know...
HP Spectre x360 with AMOLED display
The Spectre x360 has been one of our favorite notebooks from 2018 and this year HP is planning to release a revamped version with a 15.6-inch AMOLED display. This will make the product one of the few to feature such a display, especially at that size. According to the company, the new high-grade AMOLED panel will offer bright and accurate colors covering 100 percent of the DCI-P3 color space, a high contrast ratio of 100,000:1, wide horizontal viewing angles, deep blacks and a fast response time close to 0.1 ms.
The display is also said to support HDR, although it isn’t confirmed if it can render HDR10 or Dolby Vision. Surprisingly, HP hasn’t confirmed the resolution of its new AMOLED panel, so we can’t be sure if the company has managed to pull off an Ultra-HD (3840×2160) panel or sticking with a QHD (2560×1440) one. It will feature Intel’s Whiskey Lake-U processors along with Nvidia’s discrete graphics options. Expect the new AMOLED equipped Spectre x360 to launch in March.
Omen X Emperium 65
This is a big one, quite literally. If you remember, last year Nvidia along with some of its partners had announced the Big Format Gaming Display (BFGD) initiative, to bring giant 4K gaming monitors with high-refresh rate, HDR and Shield TV features. This year we are seeing one of the first ones that actually hit the markets soon.
The Omen X Emperium 65 is a drool-worthy big format gaming display featuring a built-in 120W sound-bar which will be going on sale next month. The gaming monitor features a 64.5-inch 8-bit AMVA panel with a 3840x2160 resolution, 750-1000 nits brightness , a 3200:1- 4000:1 contrast ratio, 178° viewing angles, a 120-144 Hz refresh rate, and a 4 ms response time with overdrive enabled. There is a 384-zone full direct-array backlight so it offers an improved HDR experience, and has quantum dots to produce 95 percent of the DCI-P3 color space.
The monitor is also VESA DisplayHDR 1000-certified which means it matches the highest standards for a PC HDR monitor. This means that you can expect HDR10 and hopefully Dolby Vision as well. It doesn’t have high-pixel density thus it won't be suitable for work rather its primary use will be to play games and for entertainment.
It will offer DisplayPort 1.4 input, three HDMI 2.0b inputs with support for HDMI ARC, an S/PDIF out, dual-port USB 3.0 and special sensors that detects user's hand and lights up the ports. For gamers, there is adjustable RGB lighting on the back of the panel.
Omen 15
HP also updated its Omen 15 gaming laptops featuring Nvidia’s 10-series GPUs, 240 Hz refresh rate equipped display, and a new WiFi 6 (802.11ax) controller. The company has announced that it will release the updated models in February with the new powered by the new GPUs and then in July the manufacturer will add the fast displays and new Wi-Fi controller.
According to the company, the Omen 15 is a ‘classic’ 15.6-inch gaming laptop which features a rather thick profile. The enables it to have a more effective cooling system featuring dual-fan cooling systems with large radiators and four thick heat pipes. The new Omen 15 will be offered with Intel’s six-core Core i7-8750H processor and Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q GPU.
HP EliteBook x360 830 G5 2-in-1
Aimed at business users, the EliteBook x360 830 G5 2-in-1 is a 13.3-inch machine featuring HP's Sure View integrated privacy feature. With the hit of a button, one can enable a polarizing filter that is said to dramatically limit the display's viewing angle.
Power the notebook is Intel’s 8th Gen Core i7 CPU, up to a 2TB of SSD storage, and up to 32GB of RAM and a basic Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU. In the ports department, you get two USB-C ports, two USB 3.1, an HDMI, a headphone jack, a SIM card slot, and an optional Smart Card reader. It gets a basic Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU.
The new notebook is expected to hit markets in March, no pricing has been announced.
HP Chromebook powered by AMD
Along with Acer and Asus, HP launched a new range of Chromebooks powered by AMD. The HP Chromebook 14 AMD will be available with AMD's A4 or A6 processor with integrated Radeon R4 or R5 graphics. Other than that you get basic features like a 1366x768-resolution 14-inch display, 4GB of memory and 32GB of storage.
